If disposed of in a natural setting, bio bags decompose at the same rate as paper, leaves or food waste and within eight to 14 months if disposed of in fresh or salt water. (However, it would be environmentally irresponsible to dump waste in any form of container, even bio bags, in our oceans, lakes, rivers and streams. ) Bio bags are also shelf stable, meaning they will not begin to decompose until they are exposed to the earth and its microorganisms. Bio bags are available in many different sizes that are suitable for household use. Small sized bags are ideal for kitchen composting bins; in fact, the entire contents of the bin, bag and all, can be lifted out and put into a home compost pile.
