Using Stormwater Drainage and Filtration Systems

A stormwater drainage system is designed to keep rainwater from flooding streets, parking lots, and other areas. Many of these systems have filters to help safeguard the quality of water in the nearby lakes and rivers. These filters can be in the form of organic filters or simply sand filters. They can also be referred to as "media filters," and they use sand, wood chips, or mold from leaves to filter the pollutants that can contaminate an ecosystem. The earliest form of stormwater drainage systems used sand to filter out pollutants, including dangerous phosphorous and solid waste. This system of filtration has even been used to filter drinking water in the past, and is still used in some third world countries today. The main purpose of stormwater drainage is to keep rainwater from flooding the town and filtration systems help keep the bodies of water which absorb this drainage safe.
